International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Violence against women is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 (35%) of women in their lifetime. Violence against women goes much broader and includes physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and financial abuse. Violence can negatively affect women’s physical, mental, and reproductive health. Developing and progressive country like Bangladesh has ample cases of gender violence where acts like dowry killing, rape, sexual harassment and stalking, acid attacks, physical and mental abuse and sex trafficking takes place.
The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 since 2000 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The object of the day is to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. This year’s theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, and Collect!” Bangladesh has joined with the UN for a program which has instituted a three-tier strategy to help reduce this violence, resulted in increased access to healthcare for women, a decrease in the rate of child-marriages and dowry-killings and more awareness about the lesser-known forms of gender based violence.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data, surveys and reports have shown that all types of women violence have intensified in various countries. This is a shadow pandemic woman are fighting amidst the COVID-19 crisis and we need to put collective effort to fight against it. VAALO believes in gender equality and stands for women empowerment. In this regard, we are going to arrange an online educative interactive seminar Topic is ‘Women, Disease & Violence: Where we are!’ on 5th December, 2020.
